What checks are completed at your routine dental appointment?
Regular dental visits are essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums, but are you also aware of the checks we do during your check-up appointment at Hello Dental??
We check for swelling and blockages of your glands and lymph nodes
We complete an oral cancer screening – 7591 cases of mouth cancer were diagnosed in the UK in 2013. It important for patients with missing teeth or dentures to still attend the dentist regularly for this screening.
We check your jaw joint and chewing muscles. Tension in these muscles can help indicate signs of clenching and grinding.
We check your soft tissues- cheeks, tongue, lips, palette and back of mouth to ensure there are no signs of dental diseases.
It’s crucial the teeth are checked for signs of wear and decay. Detecting tooth decay early on offers many benefits. From an oral health perspective, early stage tooth decay is treatable with very small restorations Catching tooth decay early can preserve more than just tooth structure.
Your gum health is checked and a measurement is taken every time you are seen for a check-up to check for pockets between the tooth and gum. Many people suffer from gum disease without realising the impact this can have on their lives. Gum disease is not only one of the main causes of tooth loss, it also impacts your overall health. Gum disease has been linked with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke in numerous studies.
X-rays and photographs– X-rays are taken at your first appointment with us and then again every few years or as often as appropriate, dependant on each patient’s mouth. Early tooth decay does not tend to show many physical signs. Sometimes the tooth looks healthy, but your dentist will be able to see from an x-ray whether you have any decay under the enamel, or in-between the teeth, any possible infections in the root, or any bone loss around the tooth.
We often take photographs to monitor things within your mouth and this way we are able to show you things you may possibly not be able to see in the bathroom mirror. We feel this gives our patients a greater understanding of the dental treatment we can provide and how to look after your own oral health
Many dentists do not perform all these checks, here at Hello Dental we feel that every check is vital to a health mouth and body!
