It’s no secret I champion electric toothbrush use. The cochrane review concluded that the use of a powered toothbrush significantly reduces plaque compared to using a manual toothbrush. They can also help in reducing stain build up.
Stain can be caused by smoking, use of certain mouthwashes and by food and drink which contain ‘tanins’ . Tanins are found in (amongst other things) red wine, tea, coffee and coca cola. The best way to avoid staining is to avoid these things. Failing this you can use a straw when drinking so it doesn’t touch the teeth. Rinsing with water after can also help reduce stain.
Some whitening toothpaste can help with stain but can be abrasive and cause damage to the enamel. Oral B 3D white toothpaste has given good results with stain and has no abrasive properties.
Removal of stain by a dental hygienist is fairly quick and easy by use of an ultrasonic scaler and a polish. Once the tooth surface is smooth, it is much more difficult for stain to stick to the tooth surface. This is why it is important to brush your teeth twice a day with an electric toothbrush and clean in between your teeth with floss or brushes.
